The interdisciplinary IRTG “Baltic Peripeties” offers intensive courses and colloquia that help to gain specialised in-depth knowledge of the Baltic Sea Region, its history and current research debates, as well as to apply made-to-measure methodological tools, such as narratological approaches. Academic skills workshops allow for acquiring important competences to successfully conduct individual qualification projects and to share results with the international research community and beyond.
The qualification programme aids the dialogue between experienced researchers and doctoral fellows at the three partner universities in Greifswald, Tartu and Trondheim. It provides a useful foundation for all participating members to establish international networks and advance their future careers.
Doctoral Qualification Programme
Training through research in the form of the individual doctoral projects constitutes the bulk of the programme. In line with the premises of the doctoral training programmes in Tartu and Trondheim, the research and training module consists of:
- a Key Concepts and Methods Seminar,
- a Reading Seminar,
- Chapter Sessions,
- and an Interdisciplinary Colloquium.
The collaboration of Tartu, Trondheim and Greifswald ensures that perspectives from semiotics, media studies, and area studies inform this module. Supervisors, guest researchers, and Mercator fellows provide purposeful input for the advancement of both the individual doctoral research projects and overarching research on Baltic peripeties.
Each doctoral researcher participates as an international research fellow in the programme of one or both of the foreign partner universities for a period of about six months. This serves both to strengthen networks and to guarantee the broadening of the research focus for each fellow. Besides participation in the qualification programme, visiting fellows will have the opportunity to join language courses at the host university and improve their skills in Estonian, Norwegian and German languages.
Biannual Post-Doc Colloquium
The IRTG offers a biannual colloquium for advanced researchers on a post-doctoral level, which allows for in-depth discussions of individual research projects (drafts, chapters etc.) related to the Baltic Sea Region and/or literary theory. Associated post-doctoral researchers profit from the international network and participation in all IRTG-related events over the course of the funding period.
Transferable Skills
Transferable skills seminars provide practical competencies for completing doctoral research projects, professional skills beyond their research fields, and individual support regarding career opportunities. These seminars are organised in cooperation with the Graduate Academy and the mentoring programme of the University of Greifswald, as well as external experts and coaches from academic management institutions.
