Prof. Dr Annelie Ramsbrock

With a background in Modern History and German Literature at Bielefeld University and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Annelie Ramsbrock obtained her doctorate at the Free University Berlin in 2010 – with a dissertation on the social significance of beauty ideals in the 19th and early 20th century – and her habilitation on prison reforms in modern democracies at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. She was Head of a Research Unit at the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History in Potsdam and Research Fellow at St Antony’s College at the University of Oxford before she took up the chair of Contemporary European History at the University of Greifswald. Ramsbrock’s research and teaching interests include cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries with a focus on the history of the body and the history of knowledge, the history of medicine and punishment, and the theory of history.
