After graduating in History and Slavonic Studies from the University of Tübingen in 1987, Mathias Niendorf obtained his PhD in Eastern European History from the University of Kiel in 1996. Following several years as a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw, he returned to Kiel for his habilitation in Eastern European History in 2003. Since 2010 he has been Chair of Eastern European History at the University of Greifswald.
