The PhD dissertation examines the museal representations of the 1944-1955 expulsions of Poles from the former eastern Polish borderlands in the city of Wrocław (formerly Breslau). The objective of the thesis is not to discuss the forced removal and resettlement itself, but rather to investigate how collective memories of the event are being expressed in the present, cultivating ideas of identity representative operating at both regional and national levels. Three Wrocławian museum and their narratives of this historical chapter will be forensically dissected and discussed, particularly through their currently presented contents in their permanent exhibition spaces. The dissertation is not merely interested in expanding how these post-war expulsions can otherwise be commemorated and viewed. It contributes towards understanding the complexities pertaining to a sense of belonging to both Wrocław and Poland as well, by juxtaposing and establishing touch points between the museums’ respective narratives of the historical past.
